Breaking silence

Image
Didn't post anything for a whileas I was far too busy with other stuff. My spring was quite hectic in Work (had 7 business trips since beginning of April) and I was organizing the miniature side of Ropecon 2019. Both went well, but didn't really have the push to write anything here. Well as I was organizing the Ropecon, it allowed me to also organize some events that I have wanted to have there. Most important was Armies on Parade competition. As I decided it was best to run as a public vote, I also got to participate myself. I made a (smallish) display board for my shadow elves and also finished them to full 8 points Saga force (actually I'm still missing a wizard from that, but well close to it). I'll write more about how I made the board, but this is about the miniatures. The first pics are also from the first game I had with them. I introduced my friend to Saga age of Magic and to the second edition of Saga and he used my Undead force. So it was quite a nice c...

First try of Age of Magic

Image
In a series of first tries of new games, it is now turn of one of the most anticipated by me; Saga Age of Magic. My friend visited Salute in UK and brought us some advance copies of the book, which was nice. I believe it was the first time I have played a game before its official release. I played with my Feudal Fantasy Freefolk against fanatical empires. We agreed that I could use the nature magic with my great kingdoms even if it is normally not allowed. The game works great, which was the assumption as it is Saga, which is a great game. The new additions feel pretty balanced. Although Magic felt bit compulsory as it gives quite good bonuses with pretty low price. It is understandable though as it Is the Age of Magic. We played my bipedal tree creatures with an armour of 5/5 by accident, which perhaps made them bit too good. They destroyed half of the opposing army, before got exhausted and were blasted away by a single cannon shot. Here are some in action shots: Startin...

Expansions for my Shadow elves

Image
I painted the first five models as test pieces for a new force to the Fang painting competition in the beginning of the year. Now after I got some tournament work done, it was time to expand that force. I have been collecting all sorts of elves in past year or so and it's really fun to finally get to work with them. It's fun how a coherent theme ties in the different models together. I let the photos do the talking:  Some archers, three old grenadier elves, the Maidenguard standard bearer, an old wood elf archer with bow swapped with one from the Oathmark kit and an old chariot crewman. The banner isn't exactly a masterpiece, but does its part.  These guys have featured here before. They got a musician to fill their ranks with the sword swap in to a more reasonbly sized one from the oathmark kit. From left to right, a Grenadier hero, Eternal guard with the spear tips changed to a spare axe head, plastic spear elf with arms and head from Oathmark kit, the Phoe...

Year 2018 sum up

Image
As many know, today is the first day of the year 2019, which means that it's good time to dwell in past and sum up what happened in 2018. Last year was the most productive year I have ever had painting wise. On the other hand I didn't read many books or watched movies, so it's out from something. However painting an hour or two every other evening after my son has went to sleep really keeps the production up. Also have been listening a lot of podcasts, audiobooks and audio dramas, which are nice. I used to watch tv series while painting, but never knew what was happening as  I mostly listened them, so this is certainly a better way. It's amazing how well you can concentrate on listening things while you work with your hands. Gaming wise it was a quite normal year. Could have played more, but in the end I got something like 30-40 games, which is not too bad considering a small child and a job that requires bit too much traveling for my taste. We had a two part campai...

Saga tournament

Image
We had a small Saga tournament at the Nopat & Taktiikka club in Helsinki a week ago. There were couple of cancellations during the preceding week and in the end there were 4 players in addition to me. Fun thing that two of the players came from quite far away for the tournament. Much respect for them. Having uneven number of players meant that I didn't get to play, but I had more time to build the models from my fresh Battle of Pelennor Fields boxed set for Middle Earth SBG. And finally I got to play as one of the players from our club gave me the opportunity to stand in for the final round for 2 vs 2 game. First round was the Clash of Warlords, straight from the book. On one table Tommi's Anglo Danes battled it out with Olli-Pekka's Vikings and on the other Joel's Vikings faced Matti's Scots, while my Irish were farming on the remaining table. On second round we played a breakthrough scenario, which was a modified Lord of the Rings scenario, where both play...
