First try of Age of Magic

Image
In a series of first tries of new games, it is now turn of one of the most anticipated by me; Saga Age of Magic. My friend visited Salute in UK and brought us some advance copies of the book, which was nice. I believe it was the first time I have played a game before its official release. I played with my Feudal Fantasy Freefolk against fanatical empires. We agreed that I could use the nature magic with my great kingdoms even if it is normally not allowed. The game works great, which was the assumption as it is Saga, which is a great game. The new additions feel pretty balanced. Although Magic felt bit compulsory as it gives quite good bonuses with pretty low price. It is understandable though as it Is the Age of Magic. We played my bipedal tree creatures with an armour of 5/5 by accident, which perhaps made them bit too good. They destroyed half of the opposing army, before got exhausted and were blasted away by a single cannon shot. Here are some in action shots: Startin...

Year 2018 sum up

Image
As many know, today is the first day of the year 2019, which means that it's good time to dwell in past and sum up what happened in 2018. Last year was the most productive year I have ever had painting wise. On the other hand I didn't read many books or watched movies, so it's out from something. However painting an hour or two every other evening after my son has went to sleep really keeps the production up. Also have been listening a lot of podcasts, audiobooks and audio dramas, which are nice. I used to watch tv series while painting, but never knew what was happening as  I mostly listened them, so this is certainly a better way. It's amazing how well you can concentrate on listening things while you work with your hands. Gaming wise it was a quite normal year. Could have played more, but in the end I got something like 30-40 games, which is not too bad considering a small child and a job that requires bit too much traveling for my taste. We had a two part campai...

Feudal Fantasy Freefolk (FFF)

Hi, as a follow up to yesterday's post of the general theme of the project, now a further detailing of the primary force. As said in the other post, the army started out as an army for Age of Sigmar, but I had in my mind all the time that I can use it for other stuff as well. Mainly it was a good excuse to paint some models that I had collected along the years without a proper home and some other models that I happened to like. Main body of the force are made from Perry plastics, that are some of my favourite kits ever produced by any company. The models are characterful, have nice details and realistic proportions. I'm not so interested on "button counting" historical wargaming so by fantasyfying them, I had the opportunity to use all of them, without spending too much energy on contemplating if something is wrong for the period. The project was heavily inspired by the Dark Age of Sigmar community and the main theme on the force is to visualize ordinary folk livi...

The Eternal Battle of Life and Death

Hi, had an unfortunate break to the start of my new blog as I was travelling for two weeks. First for work in Northern Finland and then for leisure in Rome and Tuscany. Quite a world's apart experience, and not just for the 30 degrees difference in the temperature. Which also is the theme of this post. I'm one of those (few?) longer time Warhammer players that had lost the interest to the game almost completely and then got it renewed with AoS, as it turned out to be actually quite a good wargame. After playing with my old Lizardmen, I retrofitted my old 40k Daemons to a complete Slaanesh army, which was also perfect reason to paint up some of my all time favourite GW models, back from the Hordes of Chaos release in 6th edition. Espcially Archaon and the knights. This is however not about them, but the fantasy projects that followed the Chaos army. Actually, of all the possibilities, the Chaos army also led me to finally start playing Lord of the Rings SBG, as I got some Har...
