Year 2018 sum up

Image
As many know, today is the first day of the year 2019, which means that it's good time to dwell in past and sum up what happened in 2018. Last year was the most productive year I have ever had painting wise. On the other hand I didn't read many books or watched movies, so it's out from something. However painting an hour or two every other evening after my son has went to sleep really keeps the production up. Also have been listening a lot of podcasts, audiobooks and audio dramas, which are nice. I used to watch tv series while painting, but never knew what was happening as  I mostly listened them, so this is certainly a better way. It's amazing how well you can concentrate on listening things while you work with your hands. Gaming wise it was a quite normal year. Could have played more, but in the end I got something like 30-40 games, which is not too bad considering a small child and a job that requires bit too much traveling for my taste. We had a two part campai...

New reinforcements for the Swedish forces

I got my second big batch of infantry done for my 30 years war project. 8 Stands of musketeers. Again the models are from Totentanz. I based the musketeers 6 to a base instead of 8 for the pikemen, as I though they look nicer in bit more skirmishing formation. I put bit more effort to the bases as I filled them with milliput and added some stones made of cork and some twigs as fallen trees. It was well worth it. Here a full Pike and shotte unit. And here the new 48 musketeers. Next in my painting queue are 4 stands of reiters, 5 stands of dragoons with the dismounted models and 3 officers. After that I actually have enough models to play By fire and sword in a Task force size (actually a lot more infantry that I'm ever going to need). I'll try to arrange a game for the first week of December.

30 Years of War in 15 Millimeters of Pewter

I recently started a new project of building armies for 30 Years War with 15mm models. I bought a bunch of Totentanz models in June and after listening an audiobook of Zacharias Topelius's classic books "Välskärin kertomuksia", a story written in 1853-1867 about two Finnish families ranging from the 30 years war to somewhere around 1800? (I haven't listened it to the end yet), I got inspired on painting the models. They were fun change after having painted a lot of 28mm arabs. I painted all 64 in a week in single batch. I undercoated them zenithally with airbrush and added also some browns and blues at the same time. Then I first painted the bright colours, then the muted colours, then the armour and boots, gave a wash of dark brown with some preussian blue mixed in and then finished with the skin and refined some details after which I gave an nice warm burnt umber ink wash to the skin and select parts. Finally I painted the pikes with airbrush by sticking them to a ...
