Winter war 2019 - Middle Earth SBG tournament

Our club held one of the biggest miniature gaming tournaments to date in Finland last weekend. We had over 160 paid players from 5 countries in 7 games (Infinity, Bolt Action, Flames of War, Warmachine, 9th Age and Warhammer 40k) in a very nice venue at the old slaughterhouse of Helsinki that has been renovated to a nice urban restaurant.

I held the painting competition on Saturday and a three game Middle earth tournament on Sunday. Painting competition had few entries, but the overall quality was very good. Unfortunately my pics were less than perfect, but anyways these give at least some guidance what we had:

Then on the "main event". We had pretty nice 14 players which far surpasssed our original reservation of 8 gamers. Luckily the tables fit very well to the reserved space. And what tables we had. I put considerable effort on getting terrain done and we got fantastic barrow downs and wintery ruins from Kalle, great Moria table from Janne and in addition the great tables from our club that were used for a Bolt Action tournament on Saturday. Even when I'm bit of biased to say, I believe that the table setup was one of the best there has been around here. Especially when compared to the printed push off ruins that they used for 40k tournament in the next room... :)

Still, for the next time I have plans on building more of Rohan houses, better forests and some wintery terrain that is also usable for beginning of 19th century battles in Finland. The houses we had around that time were pretty medieval :)

The tournament had quite a good share of small model count armies, even to the degree that it surely shifted the metagame quite a bit and probably also made some games bit one sided events. There were two 3-4 model hero forces, one moria force with three drakes, two eagle forces and one with the three trolls. Still, the win went to Mordor/Dunharrow forces at the hands of Franz, who had his first tournament ever, by beating an Isengard force at the final table. I was also in good position on the last turn having won two games with my Mordor and Dwarfs, but lost against my firend's great Minas Tirith force that I've had problems before as well. Lords of Battle with orc horde is bit of a hard setup.  All in all, great games, everyone enjoyed their time and it was good to see Middle Earth SBG back on the front stage in Finnish tournament scene. I'll definitely continue running these events in the future at our club in regular intervals. Probably next in May and then a big one in Ropecon at the end of July.

Then some more or less random photos:

Small town at the edge of marshes.

A watermill with some surrounding habitats.

Moria and the northern ruins.

The Barrow downs.

Eagles in action against Haradrim.

Trolls on the hunt.

Eastern invaders had took their rides down to the mines of Moria.

The elves and hunter orcs battle it out in midst of the ruins.

The Iron hill dwarfs are battling out with Mordor.

Elrond is chopping some drakes by the river.

Minas Tirith and Hunter orcs clash at the barrows.

Nice Iron hill force.

The troll barbeque.

"The travel friendly forces"

Nice Gondor force with the Hunter orcs behind.

My Mordor (which won the best army vote).

With my dwarfs at the behind.

Better pic from Kai's forces.
