1808, First clash on the eastern border

Image
Many first games these days. This time the rules system was The Horse and the Musket. Last autumn I painted some cossacks to field against my friend's Carelian Dragoons. It took some time for us to arrange the game (and my friend to paint those Dragoons), but now was the day. I did some terrain suitable for the event during the week; based some cheap fir trees, did some pines from ready armatures and built a timber shed in the old Finnish traditional style. The scenario was that the cossacks were looting some grains from the storage shed and got ambushed by the dragoons. The cossacks had to escape from the table edge where the dragoons entered the board. Both of us had 6 riders. I had a better force as my troops had better weapons (lances). There is a system for generating traits for the troopers by drawing cards, which balanced it out as  we drew traits for our troops and two of my troops were drunk (fittingly) and two had slow horses. We didn't have on foot models, so we ...

First game of By Fire and Sword

Image
Last week I finally got an opportunity to play By Fire and Sword, for which I painted an army last autumn. Or I actually didn't do the army for this game initially, but found out on the way that it would probably be my best bet of ever playing with my models. Thus my force is not too well made for the rules, as the basic game type is a skirmish where my pike blocks have no part in. I still had enough cavalry for the Swedish skirmish force so there was no problem, although I had to use some dragoons as stand in reiters. The game was as good as I thought. It took few rounds to get the grasp, but the basics are quite simple. There just is quite a lot of small details that need some time to get into. The game was quite tight. I was battling against cossacks, with an objective to conquer the small village in the center of the table. Cossacks got there first, as they knew the rules how to enter the buildings :) I tried to push them out, but never got more than two wounds in and the co...

Expansions for my Shadow elves

Image
I painted the first five models as test pieces for a new force to the Fang painting competition in the beginning of the year. Now after I got some tournament work done, it was time to expand that force. I have been collecting all sorts of elves in past year or so and it's really fun to finally get to work with them. It's fun how a coherent theme ties in the different models together. I let the photos do the talking:  Some archers, three old grenadier elves, the Maidenguard standard bearer, an old wood elf archer with bow swapped with one from the Oathmark kit and an old chariot crewman. The banner isn't exactly a masterpiece, but does its part.  These guys have featured here before. They got a musician to fill their ranks with the sword swap in to a more reasonbly sized one from the oathmark kit. From left to right, a Grenadier hero, Eternal guard with the spear tips changed to a spare axe head, plastic spear elf with arms and head from Oathmark kit, the Phoe...

First try of the Warlords of the Erehwon

Image
Warlord games released recently the fantasy version of one of my favourite games Beyond the Gates of Antares. I was bit sceptic in the beginning how the system will work with mainly close combat oriented armies as the system is based on shooting and the close combat is very bloody. Well after acquiring the book I got little bit less afraid as the rules had been slightly tweaked and there really isn't so much shooting. Although quite many units get some sort of shooting, like throwing rocks etc. which is nice. Also the rules still using 'pins' and 'down' terms are bit off in a sword and sorcery setting, but it doesn't matter too much. The rules system is based on the Bolt action mechanisms. I haven't ever played BA, but the system of random activation through drawing order dice combined with pins and command checks makes the system really fun to play and keeps it interesting. I have plenty of existing armies that are suitable for the game so it was just a m...

My Forces of Evil

As I got a major milestone completed with the tournament last weekend, I took some photos of the whole current force that starts to be quite a sizeable lot.
